About Woody Beatty
For more than half a century, Woody Beatty has been a trusted voice, a steady hand at the piano, and a beloved presence in Southern Gospel music. Raised in a Bible-believing church, Woody’s earliest memories are of singing hymns, learning harmony, and discovering the calling that would shape the rest of his life.
His journey began in the late 1960s, when he and his wife Peggy joined with Ed Enoch to form The Inspirations. In 1969, that trio was invited to join the legendary Jake Hess—widely recognized as one of the greatest lead singers in Gospel music history—as part of the Music City Singers. From there, doors continued to open. In 1970, Woody was asked to step into the role of lead singer for iconic tenor Rosie Rozell and The Searchers, an experience that deeply influenced his musical style and ministry heart.
But Woody’s greatest calling was family. In 1974, he brought the Beatty family together to form The Singing Beattys—a ministry that carried Woody, Peggy, and their sons Kerry and Brian through churches and revivals throughout the 1970s and ’80s. During this era, Woody also launched Beattys Records, producing and recording many artists who would later join major groups across the industry.
In the 1990s, Woody stepped into a new chapter as arranger for the Palmetto State Quartet, working closely with the distinguished Hovie Lister, who served as the group’s pianist until returning to The Statesmen in 1992. At that point, Woody became Palmetto State’s pianist, master of ceremonies, and primary arranger, roles he held for more than a decade. His leadership helped solidify the group’s national reputation for excellence.
Through the late ’90s and early 2000s, Woody continued to bless audiences as pianist for Southern Sound Quartet and The Singing Ambassadors. Then, in 2005, he accepted an invitation from Dr. Jerry Goff and Lil Jan Buckner Goff—both members of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame—to join their music and preaching ministry. It became one of the richest and most rewarding seasons of his career.
Today, after a lifetime of singing, playing, mentoring, and ministering, Woody Beatty says he has never been more excited than he is right now—as he helps reintroduce a renewed and visionary Palmetto State Quartet to audiences across America.
A group with heritage stretching back to 1948, Palmetto State has long been respected as one of Southern Gospel’s premier quartets, and Woody is honored to help lead this new era with the same passion, excellence, and Christ-centered heart that have defined his entire career.
When the Palmetto State Quartet comes to your area, Woody invites you to join them for an evening of music, worship, and encouragement — the same message he has faithfully carried for more than 50 years.--
